FKF support to the greater Nairobi community is more than providing some 60,000 visitors a month, a safe, secure and serene access to the forest thanks to the electric perimeter fence and daily patrols.

FKF is also directly helping the surrounding communities, in particular the Huruma, Githogoro and Deep Sea informal settlements that border the forest to the north and south, by providing the following:

  • 117 permanent jobs and over 400 income generating forestry contracts per year amounting to some 12 million shillings for neighboring informal settlements.
  • Beekeeping equipment, training including a honey processing plant
  • One-day-a-week supervised deadfall wood-gathering for domestic use by community members (image above right)
  • Over 700 income-generating forestry contracts per year amounting to some 12 million shillings for neighboring informal settlements.
  • Serene and secure national protected area with fulltime electric fence and frequent patrols
  • A bursary fund providing secondary school level scholarships for some 130 children a year
  • Subsidized forest visits for 1500 schools kids from disadvantaged areas per year
  • A safe place for over 16,000 school kids to learn about forests and environmental conservation thanks to KFEET, the Karura Forest Environment Education Trust.
  • 65,000 trees/shrubs seedlings of some 70 species available at the FKF nursery
  • 23 indigenous mammal species and over 200 bird species
  • Modern and clean washrooms facilities at all gates and picnic sites
