Community Support

FKF is also directly helping the communities living next to the forest, in particular the Huruma, Githogoro, and Deep Sea informal settlements that border the forest to the north and south. FKF raises funds through bicycle hire, membership fees, sale of branded merchandise, and other services to support a bursary fund providing  293 Secondary School Bursaries in 2023-25 for local community children.

  • Over 400 income generating forestry contracts per year amounting to some 12 million KSH for neighbouring informal settlements.
  • Beekeeping equipment, training including a honey processing plant.
  • One-day-a-week supervised deadfall wood-gathering for domestic use by community members.

  • Subsidized forest visits for 1500 schools kids from disadvantaged areas per year.
  • A safe place for over 16,000 school kids to learn about forests and environmental conservation thanks to KFEET, the Karura Forest Environment Education Trust.
